Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), it is estimated that as many as 1 out of 5 children experience a mental disorder in a given year.
Has your child/teen been more stressed this month?
With MAP testing, KPREP, final exams, graduations – kids tend to put more pressure on themselves. Anxiety may look like fear or worry, but can also make children irritable and angry.
Anxiety symptoms can also include trouble sleeping, as well as physical symptoms like fatigue, headaches, or stomachaches. It’s normal to feel an increase level in anxiety in the last couple of weeks of school. With the school year coming to an end, help your child/teen take mental breaks from the stress.
- Getting enough sleep: the importance of sleep goes beyond just the night before an exam – sleep empowers effective thinking and school performance.
- Make sure your kids are eating a healthy diet: have them take a break from studying and help you prepare dinner.
- Physical activity: the weather is getting warmer – take the dog for a walk, dance to your favorite song or go on a hike and enjoy nature.
