Back to School and Sleep
It is never too late to start good routines for back to school. Healthy sleep is one of the most important! You might be surprised by the recommendations for total hours of sleep in 24 hours from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine: 8-10 hours for teens 13-18 years, and 9-12 hours for kids 6-12 years. Healthy sleep promotes better school performance, behavior, and mental health as well as a stronger immune system. Making good sleep a family priority - with a good bedtime routine, lights low/off 30 min before bedtime, screens away from the bed - helps everyone off to the best start possible!

Specialty Care Referrals
We are fortunate to live in a region with many outstanding subspecialty providers for kids, including hospital based as well as independent medical and surgical providers. We can provide recommendations for options when we discuss a referral. As you explore the providers available, we recommend considering factors such as - out of pocket cost, insurance coverage (e.g. In network , out of network), discounts due to employment, and any other incentives. Reaching out to your insurance company, utilizing their website/preferred provider database, contacting subspecialist offices/hospitals or billing departments directly, can provide valuable insight into these factors and help guide decisions on where to seek care. We at PANK understand how overwhelming and confusing this process (and the answers you receive : ) can be. We are committed to helping families navigate this process however we can!

Anxiety Screening at Teen Well Visits
Many of you may be aware that Pediatric Associates is a partner with other local pediatric practices and Cincinnati Children's in several of our clinical initiatives. The overall goal of these projects is to improve children's health in our community by partnering specialists and primary care providers to develop and implement treatment guidelines for use in primary care settings. In July, we launched our latest effort with this group to improve screening for anxiety in teens ages 12-17 years at well visits. This is in addition to existing depression screening. This work is the culmination of a year of meetings between primary care providers and specialists at CCHMC developing provider education, practice resources, and treatment guidelines. Annual screening for anxiety is recommended by multiple professional organizations and the US Preventive Task Force. It is our sincere hope that our continued systematic focus on identifying mental health issues early will improve the long term health (physical and mental) of our patients. Please let us know at your visit if you have any questions about this!
